오랫만에 이런 종류의 영어책을 본 것 같다. 무심코 쓰던 잘못된 영어를 바로 잡을 수 있는 좋은 기회가 되었던 것 같다. 책을 읽으면서 적은 문장과 내용인데 아무래도 인터넷에 공개로 올라가면 좋지는 않을 것 같아서, 서로이웃에게만 공개하는 것으로 해서 올려 본다. 영어 공부를 한동안 아예 하지 못해서 약간은 고민하고 있었지만 이런 가볍게 읽을 수 있는 책이라도 보면 무심코 썼던 실수를 만회할 수 있는 기회는 되는 것 같다. 나와 같은 직장인이 재미있고 가볍게 읽을 수 있으니 공부를 한다는 생각에 부담스럽지는 않을 듯 싶다. 나처럼 영어를 그다지 잘하지 못하는 30대라면 한번 가볍게 읽어보자.

Have you heard of Robert DeNiro, the actor?
Do you know…? 란 표현은 사람에 대해서만 사용한다. 장소 음식, 물건 등은 Have you ever heard of…? 또는 Have you ever been to…?를 사용한다. 유명인 등을 지칭할 때는 Have you ever heard of…?를 사용한다.

 

Do you like your major?

 

우리 사귀자 라고 할 때는 find a boyfriend (or girlfriend)를 사용한다.
Why is it so hard to find a boyfriend who likes to cook?

 

이성에게 (애인이 아니라) 친구로 지내자고 할 때 ‘make friend with’을 사용하면 성관계를 맺자 (make love, have sex)라는 말로 오해 될 수 있다.

‘be drunk’는 알코올로 인해 취한 상태를 말한다.
I drank so much beer last night that I got very drunk.

 

‘get drunk’는 만취할 정도로 술을 많이 마시다.
I got drunk with my friend after test.

My grandmother died of stomach cancer in 2002.

‘dead’는 형용사로 죽은 상태를 말한다.
My grandfather is dead.
She has been dead for 2 years.

 

누구에게 무엇인가를 추천한다는 ‘I recommend 물건 행동 to you’라고 한다.
I recommend (seeing) this movie (to you).
I recommend this restaurant (to you).

 

‘Call to’ means ‘call out’ or ‘yell’, however ‘call’ means ‘telephone’.

 

I’m tried. I should rest.
He rested after finishing his morning run.

 

마음을 정하다는 decide my mind가 아니라 decide or make up my mind이다.

No. That’s all that I have to say. (all what is wrong)

 

Fried foods are not good for you.

How about은 상대방에게 무엇인가를 제안하거나 권유를 하는 의미이다. 상대방의 견해를 물을 때는 What do you think of? How do you feel about? Do you like? 등을 사용한다.

There is의 there는 장소를 가리키는 부사가 아니다.

I wish you (간접목적어) happiness (직접목적어) with all my heart.

By + 미래시점은 미래 시점보다 늦지 않게라는 의미이다.
Until은 상황이 계속 이어지다가 미래의 특정한 한 시점에서 끝나는 상황을 말한다.
Can you repair my car by Wed?
No. I’ll need to keep it until Friday.

 

결혼하는 행위 자체를 표현할 때는 ‘get married’를 사용한다.
When did you get married? – I got married in June.
결혼해 있는 상태, 또는 결혼생활기간을 말할 때는 be married를 사용한다.
Are you married? Yes I am married.
I married my college boyfriend.

 

Comfortable은 신체적인 안락감을 제공해 주는 어떤 물건을 묘사할 때 사용한다.
사람은 comfortable이라고 쓰면 안된다.
I love my old sweater because it’s so comfortable.
My friend is easy to be with.

 

The subway is a very convenient way to get to work.

 

I’m going to be back in 15 mins.

 

May I please speak to Mr. MC Kim?

지금을 기준으로 해서 미래의 시점에는 in을 과거 시점에는 ago를 사용한다.
She is going to be back in 15 mins.
I’m going for a walk. I’ll be back in an hour.


Later는 현재 시점과 관련이 없는 미래 시점을 말할 때 쓰인다.
He went to the movies and came back 2 hours later.


After는 시간보다는 사건을 지칭한다.
I’ll be back after I finish my work.


Ago는 현재를 기준으로 측정된 과거의 시간을 지칭한다.
He left 45 mins ago.


시간보다 사건을 기준으로하면 before를 사용한다.

See는 눈으로 주변환경을 인식하는 것

look at은 눈으로 살펴보는 것 또는 보기 위해 시선을 주는 것, 움직이지 않는 대상

움직이는 물체는 watch

가벼운 병이나 응급처치를 요하지 않는 상처로 병원에 갈 때는 to the doctor’s office’
I had a cold, so I went to the doctor’s office.

일반적으로 수업을 들으면서 공부할 때는 study….
구체적인 기술을 지칭하면서 배운다고 할 때는 learn how to …
구체적인 분야에 관해 배울 때는 learn about…

 

함께 시간을 보낸다는 의미는 see
단지 만나는 의미는 meet
I saw my friends yesterday.
Let’s meet at 2:00


put on 우리 몸에 옷을 한가지씩 걸치는 동작을 나타내며 반대는 take off
get dressed는 아침에 옷을 차려 입는 것을 의미
wear는 몸에 옷을 걸치고 있는 상태

I was cold, so I put on a sweater.
I got up at 7:00, took a shower and got dressed.
Today I’m wearing jeans and a T-shirt.

 

Nearby는 지금 있는 곳에서 무언가가 가까이 있을 때 사용
I live nearby (I live nearby here – wrong)

 

어떤 장소에 가까이에 무엇이 있을 때는 near 명사 사용
There is a movie theater near my house.

 

보통, 누군가의 좋은 성품을 나타내는 때는 nice를 사용.
Your friend seems very nice.

Kind는 부드럽고 사려 깊으며, 도움을 주는 구체적인 행동을 보여줄 때.
The kind old lady next door baked cookies for the children.

 

보통은 have a good time보다는 have a nice day를 쓰는 것이 좋음.
재미있는 무언가를 하러 가는 사실을 알고 있을 때만 have a good time!을 쓴다.
Have a nice day at work and have a good time at the party.

 

Incident 의도적인 사건, 사고
The incident of the hostage taking in Texas was reported in the news.
Accident 의도하지 않은 사건
Several people were killed in the car accident.

 

I stayed at the Hyatt Hotel in Seoul.
I visited Tokyo.
I lived in Seoul for two years.

 

Best는 성적 또는 성과가 제일 좋은 것을 의미
Favorite는 성적이나 성과에 관계없이 가장 좋아하는 것을 의미

 

Ashamed는 강한 죄책감이나 치욕스러움
You should feel ashamed for lying to the judge.

Embarrassed는 일반적인 경우
I feel embarrassed when I have to speak in front of people.

 

잠자러 가는 시간 즉, 잠을 자기 시작한 시간을 의미할 때는 I went to sleep
I went to sleep at midnight.

잠자고 있는 동안을 의미할 때는 I slept…
I slept for 8 hours last night.

 

구체적인 시점이 주어졌다면 단순과거시제를 쓰고, 구체적인 시점이 없다면
현재완료시제를 쓴다.

I have been to Lotte World several times.
I went to Lotte World last summer.
I have been to England.
I went to England when I was a child.

 

현재 완료시제와 같이 쓰이는 ever는 의문문에서만 사용
have you ever beet to Seoul?

 

Had better는 상하 관계가 뚜렷한 관계에서만 사용

Let’s get together for lunch on Saturday.
I have a job interview on Jan 7.
I was born on Nov 11, 2011.

일반적인 대상에 대한 기호를 말할 때는 복수형태를 사용
I like dogs.

After dinner, we went to the movies.

 

스포츠 경기 이름 앞에는 관사를 붙이지 않는다.
I like basketball.

 

I go aboard several times a year as part of my job.
The first time I went overseas was on my honeymoon.
First, let’s go here, and then let’s go there.
